SOMETHING LIKE DECEMBER — WE ALL DIE LAUGHING — THE REVIEW
Full of a mixture between edgy indie rock and pop melodies and riffs, We’ll All Die Laughing is a pretty decent EP. Something Like December’s EP has a couple elements that make it cool to listen too, but otherwise falls a little flat with nothing to stand out.
The EP starts off with “The Last Laugh,” which features a cool muted guitar riff in the intro. Everything else comes together in the track to make the upbeat sound kind of slick, making a mix of that and the rougher sound of the guitars. The instrumentals definitely outweigh the vocals and lyrics, and create a cool atmospheric sound that’s easy to get into. The next track, “Taste (I Surrender)” has the biggest sound on the track, making it a little more anthemic and aggressive than the first. The next three tracks, “Keep Running,” “Georgie,” and “Closer” are more popish than the first two. All three are more melodic and have a cutesy feel to them. Lyrically they’re a bit better too, especially with the lyrics from “Georgie”: “I know I’m young and dumb, but I think I really need someone to chase my thoughts away.” The last track on the EP, “Beginner’s Luck,” is a bit different from the rest of the tracks; there are news sound bites featured in the middle about the emotional aftermath of school shootings. It’s an interesting ending to the EP, having more to do with starting over and dealing with grief and moving on than the other tracks.
Overall, Something Like December’s EP was pretty good. Their sound is an interesting mix of indie pop melodies with a tiny bit of edge. The lyrics and vocals weren’t amazing, but their instrumentals kept me interested.
